According to CROMAC, there are still 887 km2 of mine-suspected areas out of which a quarter is still presenting a constant and severe threat to everyday living for residents in those areas and hampering regional development. 14 JULY 2010 - ASB IMPLEMENTS ANOTHER MINE-CLEARANCE PROJECT IN 2010 IN THE REPUBLIC OF CROATIA WITH FUNDS FROM THE GERMAN GOVERNMENT
The Office of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) in the Republic of Croatia has recently received funds from the German Foreign Ministry to implement mine-clearance of approx. 450,000 m2. It is envisaged to conduct several mine-clearance and survey projects in the municipality of Petrinja, Sisačko-Moslavačka County; the municipality of Sodolovci, Osiječko-Baranjska County; the municipality of Markušica, Vukovarsko-Srijemska County; the municipality of Gospić, Ličko-Senjska County; the municipality of Poličnik, Zadarska County, and in the municipality of Vodice, Šibensko-Kninska County. The total value of this project amounts to €530,000 and will be implemented until the end of 2010.

On 4 May 2010, His Excellency Mr. Joachim Schmidt, German Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany and his wife Mrs. Barbara Veeh-Schmidt visited projects implemented by the Office of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) in 2008 and 2009 in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) with funds from the German Government through the German Foreign Ministry. The delegation was accompanied by Mr. Matthias Heinz, First Secretary, and Ms. Christiane Heinze, Officer for Economy and Economic Co-operation of the German Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Office of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) in the Republic of Croatia has recently finalised mine-clearance of 660,000 m2 in the municipality of Petrinja, Sisačko-Moslavačka County; the municipalities of Sodolovci, Osiječko-Baranjska County; the municipalities of Stari Jankovci, Markušića and Jarmina, Vukovarsko-Srijemska County, in the municipality of Gospić, Ličko-Senjska County, and in the area of the town of Šibenik, Šibensko-Kninska County. This project was carried out in close co-operation with the Croatian Centre for Demining (CROMAC). The total value of this project amounted to €800,000.

The Office of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) in the Republic of Croatia has recently finalised the EU-funded project focusing on development and consolidation of democracy, the rule of law and respect for human and minority rights through strengthening the reconciliation process and citizens' participation in the decision making process. This project was implemented in the towns of Pakrac and Lipik and in the municipality of Okučani in Croatia in partnership with the Serbian Democratic Forum (SDF), Croatia. The total value of this project was €124,973.

The project was implemented in close co-operation with the "Kralj Zvonimir" vocational high school in Knin, "Lovre Monti" high school in Knin and the "Marko Marulić" college in Knin, at value of €60,053.

This project will be implemented in the municipalities of Užice, Kruševac, Kula, Smederevo, Bačka Palanka, Temerin and Medvedja in partnership with the non-governmental organisation "Educational Centre" from Leskovac, Serbia.

Under the CARDS 2004 programme, the Office of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) in the Republic of Croatia has recently finalised the implementation of the EU-funded project to provide social services to the elderly through the home care services in the Municipalities of Majur and Kukuruzari in Sisačko-Moslavačka County in Croatia. This project was implemented in co-operation with the local non-governmental organisation ''Novi Svijet''. The value of this project was €281,090 of which €232,349 was provided by the European Commission (EC), €43,741 by ASB and €5,000 by the Municipality of Donji Kukuruzari.

Under the CARDS 2004 programme, the Office of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) in the Republic of Croatia has recently implemented a project to develop rural tourism in the border area of the town of Knin in Šibenik-Knin County, Croatia and the town of Bosansko Grahovo in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) with funds from the European Commission (EC). This project was implemented in co-operation with the civil society organisation (CSO) ''Hoću kući'' Knin and the municipality of Bosansko Grahovo. The value of this project was €159,000 of which €142,000 was provided by the EC and €17,000 by ASB.

The Office of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund in Bosnia and Herzegovina (ASB) has recently finalised the implementation of the project for the reconstruction of 33 houses for minority Bosniak returnees from the Canton of Sarajevo to the Municipality of Foča in the Republic of Srpska, the reconstruction of two health centres in Tjenište and Kozja Luka in the Municipality of Foča, the reconstruction of four bridges in the Municipality of Kalinovnik and the delivery of 29 grants for economic recovery and sustainability. This was a joint project in which funds were merged by the Ministry of Labour, Social Policy, Displaced Persons and Refugees of the Canton of Sarajevo, the Ministry of Housing of the Canton of Sarajevo and the Ministry of Health of the Canton of Sarajevo (€670.374,20), the German Foreign Ministry (€145,000) and ASB (€77,350), totalling €892.724,20.

The total value of this project amounts to €208,350.

The total value of this project was €1,000.000 of which €750,000 was provided by the European Commission (EC), €100,000 by the Sarajevo Canton and €150,000 by ASB.

On Friday, 27 February 2009, Lt. Col. Burkhard Kühnapfel, Military Envoy of the Federal Republic of Germany, visited the ASB mine worksite in the settlement of Podgradina, the county of Zadar, accompanied by Mr. Wolfgang Raschka, Head of the Office of Arbeiter-Smariter-Bund (ASB) in the Republic of Croatia. This visit was organised in order to inspect the implementation of the mine-clearance activities within the ASB's 2008 Humanitarian Mine Clearance Project funded by the German Government.

On 22 July 2008, the Office of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) in the Republic of Croatia, represented by Mr. Wolfgang Raschka, Project Manager of ASB Croatia and the Croatian Centre for Demining (HCR), represented by Mr. Mirko Ivanušić, Deputy Director of HCR, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Sisak in the presence of Mr. Bernd Heinze, Deputy Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany. Based on this MoU, the Government of the FR of Germany commits to provide €800,000 for mine-clearance in Croatia in 2008.

On Thursday, 14 July 2008, Lt. Col. Burkhard Kühnapfel, Military Envoy of the Federal Republic of Germany, visited the ASB mine survey site in the municipality of Stari Jankovci to mark this year's ASB mine-clearance project funded by the German Foreign Ministry in the Republic of Croatia. Through this project, the Office of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) in Croatia carries out mine-clearance activities of 650,000 m2 of agricultural areas, yards and gardens in six counties in Croatia in co-operation with the Croatian Centre for Demining (HCR).

Under the project for the provision of social services within the CARDS 2004 programme, the Office of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) in the Republic of Croatia and its project partner, the civil society organisation "Novi Svijet", have recently set up a mobile social team to provide home care services for the elderly in the municipalities of Majur and Donji Kukuruzari in Sisak-Moslavina County in Croatia. For this project, ASB employed 10 people including one nurse and nine care takers who carry out a variety of social services.

On 22 June 2007, the Office of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) in the Republic of Croatia, represented by Mr. Wolfgang Raschka, Head of ASB Office in Croatia and the Croatian Centre for Demining (CROMAC), represented by Mr. Oto Jungwirth, CROMAC Director, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Sisak. In Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), the Office of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) has recently started the implementation of the "Socio-economic empowerment of particularly vulnerable groups such as female war victims and mine victims" Project in the Municipalities of Prijedor, Banja Luka, Trebinje in the Republic of Srpska, the Municipalities of Gorazde, Tuzla, Lukavac and Velika Kladusa in the BiH Federation and in the Sarajevo Canton. The total value of this project is €1,000.000 of which €750,000 is being provided by the EC, €100,000 by the Sarajevo Canton and €150,000 by ASB.
