2014-08-20

Project “Provision of housing reconstruction and economic revitalisation to most vulnerable flood-affected families in Serbia” is jointly developed by four non-governmental organizations: Arbeiter Samariter Bund as main applicant together with Initiative for Development and Cooperation, Housing Centre and “Ana I Vlade Divac” Foundation is a part of EUR30 million program “EU Assistance for flood relief in Serbia”.

The aim of the project is to support the normalisation of housing conditions for flood-affected families in Valjevo, Loznica, Mali Zvornik, Ljubovija, Osecina, Bajina Basta, Sid and Sabac as well as to support the economic revitalisation of flood- affected families in these municipalities.

ASB together with Housing Centre will focus on immediate support to to most vulnerable families in the above–mentioned target area which have been heavily affected by the floods. IDC with Ana and Vlade Divac Foundation will support affected families in economic revitalisation since they have lost their income for the current year through the loss of livestock, nutrition for livestock and planned crops’ in their flooded fields but also small family enterprises which have been affected through the floods being the sole income for the families.

The 1st result of the action will be reached through a coordinated action by both the Housing Center and ASB in the provision of durable housing solutions to flood affected families in 8 municipalities in North-western Serbia. A total of 200 families will receive direct assistance for their homes through the implementation of 3 types of actions: 1) Performing of construction works on damages houses (168 families), 2) Purchase and instalment of prefab housing units for completely destroyed houses (30 families) and 3) Purchase/distribution of equipment and furniture for all 200 households in a tailor-made fashion per family.

The activities related to the 2nd project result will be implemented by the co-applicants IDC and Divac who have vast experience in the field of economic revitalisation. The major aim is to re-activate in the shortest period of time the economic capacities of affected SMEs and small family businesses in order for them to be able to generate income and prevent them from tumbling into poverty. The main focus will be on crafts workshops, small businesses and agriculture-orientated family households. Next to the economic strengthening through provision of equipment, the project envisaged minor shelter repair for economic facilities including amongst others: shops, stables, etc.

By the end of the project, it is expected that:

  • at least 168 families that will receive reconstruction of their homes which are more severely damaged;
  • at least 30 families which will receive new prefabricated housing units for completely destroyed houses;
  • at least 200 families that will receive furniture and appliances for their homes;
  • at least 34 families which will receive minor reconstruction for their damaged shops/stables;
  • at least 100 small businesses which will receive economic grants for the revitalisation of their damaged businesses due to floods.
